Scottish Technology helps LogicaCMG decongest Dutch roads
19 June 2003
Pioneering technology developed by Scotland-based company Applied Generics is playing a pivotal role in a major new traffic service being introduced to meet the Dutch government’s traffic information needs in the Noord-Brabant region. The deal is being announced today (19 June) at a press conference held in Den Bosch.
This will be the first large-scale commercial application of Applied Generics’ RoDIN24 technology, the innovation behind Mobile Traffic Services (MTS), which is being launched by the solutions group LogicaCMG in cooperation with Vodafone this summer. The system will use the existing mobile telephone network to generate historical and real time information on the entire Noord Brabant road network. The data gathered will be processed and deployed instantly to meet the needs of both the road operator in this case the Province of Noord-Brabant and road users.
Commenting on the news Applied Generics’ managing director Dr Joe Dixon said “Working with LogicaCMG on this contract marks a real milestone in Applied Generics’ development and we look forward to working with our new partners in what will be a large-scale commercial application of our RoDIN24 system. The Dutch and Noord Brabant Roads Authorities are among the most progressive in Europe and we are hopeful it may lead to much wider use of our technology by road operators throughout Europe and beyond.”
RoDIN24 is a software application that captures road traffic information from data transmitted by mobile phones. The technology draws on the existing telecoms infrastructure to allow bulk monitoring of network signaling data that is passively collected from drivers' and passengers’ handsets. By gathering route and speed data for many anonymous subscribers a view of the road traffic situation can be maintained and relayed back to road users and other parties.
Applied Generics was approached in summer 2002 by LogicaCMG, which wanted to make the RoDIN24 technology an integral feature of a major consortium bid responding to a Dutch Government tender that sought to outsource traffic information gathering and distribution services. The Province of Noord-Brabant is the first customer for the MTS service. Vodafone is also partnering LogicaCMG in this project.
