Applied Generics

Applied Generics was founded in 1999 by Joe Dixon, Ian Atkinson, and Bruce Adam, and is based just outside Edinburgh. Their main product is called RoDIN24 (Road Delay Information Network). This product computes the traffic delays in the road network, by monitoring the movement of active mobile telephones.

The core technology (which has patents submitted for) locates moving mobile users using a variety of mechanisms and then maps this to the road network. The delay information that is generated can then delivered via, WAP, HTML, IVR, and SMS. This core traffic information can be built upon, enabling a range of applications to be deployed to subscribers, such as RoDIN24 Personal (will alert individual users if their normal route is busy).

The initial target customer is the mobile network operator, and via partnerships, to third parties, such as car manufacturers, government agencies, etc.

The Applied Generics solution has a number of distinct competitive advantages:

the cost of deployment is low (it is a software solution)

it can be rolled out across an operators entire European network in a short time period, offering one service to all subscribers

it has increased road coverage because it does not rely on sensors being installed

it works in adverse weather conditions
